Manufacturing SMEs Need Financial Clarity More than a Full-Time FD

By Colin Sharp

When a Business Looks Healthy But Feels Uncertain

Many owner-managed manufacturing businesses reach a similar point. Orders are coming in. The team is busy. From the outside, the business looks healthy. But underneath, the picture is often less clear.

Margins are uncertain. Cash flow feels tighter than expected. The ERP system produces data, but not always insight. And the owner is left carrying the weight of decisions without a clear financial view.

That is where the issue usually sits. Not in effort, commitment or ambition. But in clarity.

Why Financial Clarity Matters More Than Headcount

Many growing businesses do not need a full-time Finance Director.

But they do need someone who can help them:

  • understand the numbers properly
  • identify pressure points early
  • bring calm, practical financial leadership.

My work focuses on part-time Finance Director and fractional CFO support for owner-managed businesses, particularly in manufacturing. This includes cash flow forecasting, cost and margin analysis, ERP insight and board-level support.

The Questions That Matter Most

In practice, the real value comes from helping owners answer a small number of critical questions:

  • Are we making the margins we think we are?
  • Where is cash actually going?
  • Which numbers matter most?
  • What needs to change now to avoid problems later?

When those answers are unclear, even strong businesses can drift into avoidable pressure.

Turning Data Into Decisions

What most businesses need is not more reporting. They need:

  • clear interpretation
  • sound judgement
  • practical action

They need someone who can understand the operational reality behind the numbers and translate financial information into better decisions.

Why Broader Perspective Matters

This is one of the reasons I value being part of UK Business Advisors. Business challenges rarely sit in one area. A cash flow issue may also involve pricing, systems, process, leadership or execution. Being part of a wider advisory network means I can support clients not only with financial clarity, but also connect them with the expertise needed to address the wider picture.

A Different Question for SME Owners

For many manufacturing businesses, the question is not: “Can we justify a full-time FD?”

It is: “Can we afford to keep making important decisions without enough financial clarity?”

That is a very different question.
